Says we made 3 club record transfer bids, board were fantastic in backing and supporting him etc, I know that wont go down too well on here though!!!!! hahahaha

Sullivan was also negotiating a new contract with Soucek , the bid for Philips may also have been a bluff to force Soucek demands down, it’s strange Sullivan decided to negotiate a new deal with him on transfer deadline day.

I think the Phillips "bid" posed more questions. If genuine was that to replace Rice or pair Phillips with him? If it was to pair them then where does that leave Soucek? So by making the bid it pretty much says to the fans that they are looking to replace Rice.

Quite rightly we think he is a Head of Recruitment and will work on the recruiting strategy that's not the job of a Chief Scout who just tells the other 2 scouts to go to QPR and have a look at their full back for me...
He should be dealing with agents across Europe, South America, Asia and Africa to find the best prospects and setting up networks to players that may be available.
Its his full time job - he should have all this ready and waiting for the window to open. His contacts at clubs and agents should be biting his hand off come day 1.
What the hell has he been doing... sounds to me like they drew up a list of 8 players and when the dwarf said too expensive will they take a loan offer - they ran out of ideas.
This is what is so frustrating with all the supposed knowledge there and money to spend we still can't sign anyone..
And were Phillips and Raphina really on Moyes's/Newman's list I doubt it.
To be fiar to them considering how Caleta Car didn't sign - they've been tracking him for a couple of years/windows how did that fall thru? All the signs were it was close but Sullivan wanted a loan deal... Why they didn't want big money and if he was on Moyes and Newman's list and we had the money - the only reason we didn't sign him was because Sullivan had no intention of signing anyone...

I took it to mean that the eight targets were feasible - if not, why stop at Phillips and Raphinha? And I think its part of Newman's role to do his due diligence in order to formulate a realistic list of targets.
You are right though - we don't know the full facts and until we do we are all conjecturing. But given that (and accepting Crass' and fraser's observations), history, gut instinct and available facts lead one to the conclusion that the blockage, once again, was with GSB.

goose - according to that article he went a whole summer window without signing a player, so you can't presume it was one and not the other.
Your analogy of a bad back could apply to both parties is all I am saying.

No, I get that Chim and I totally agree that the scouting and potential availability is all-important here but that was really my point.
I think Fo the Communist 10:55 Thu Feb 3 here mentions something about Moyes giving the Board eight players and they 'typically failed to sign the targets'. It was this type of talk I don't understand.
Using this example, I'd want to know who the eight targets were and why they didn't get them. For example, if one was Lingard then that wasn't anyone at WHU's fault. If, as seems confirmed, we bid £50m for one or other of the Leeds pair then it means that money was available. I don't see that as the Boards fault. Leeds weren't likely to deal were they? If it didn't secure anyone on Moyes's list perhaps the clubs wouldn't let go. If Moyes sees Messi as a player he'd like and the board bid and PSG so go away then I don't expect to see the Manager shrug and say the player he wanted wasn't available.
I'd expect Moyes to have a big list of the top talent - developing youngsters, Championship, European, and top PL possibilities - to boost the squad and I'd expect that list to be maintained during any window so players could be bought in if needed. It's this failure that is alarming to me.

I think Chief Scout is usually the title given to the person in charge of the scouting network, which is basically what he is. Because he was given this Head of Recruitment job title some people think it means more than it does, as if he was a Director of Football.
Given what a debacle this transfer window has been I'd have thought that any mention of him at all would be tantamount to passing the buck.

Newman is not the Chief Scout he is the Head of Recruitment which includes being in charge of the Scouts.
I just would have expected hi to get a mention as to the hard work both he and Moyes had done to identify the players they wanted.
But nothing - I just thought it was odd - but maybe it's just me?

The concept of Moyes only wanting players to improve the first 11 is admirable but flawed in the modern game. It seems like Moyes has created a similar situation as Spurs have when signing a striker - whoever is signed knows that won't be first choice.
The difference here is that Antonio is a 31year old converted winger who also happens to be quite injury prone. Where as Kane is (theoretically) one of the best strikers on the planet. Surely any good quality striker should be looking at becoming first choice. Given his age and limitations, Antonio has to be looked at as back up come next season - it's a golden opportunity for us to sign a top quality striker and have very back up good options in Antonio and Bowen.
I can only hope and assume that something big is lined up for the summer and Moyes is prepared to wait until then to get the player he wants. In the meantime, it really is inexcusable that we didn't get any forward player in, even a loan. For example, that lad Burnley have signed for £12m surely would have jumped at the chance to come and given his stats would probably have done a decent enough job for a couple of years.

Why would he mention Newman? How often do you hear managers talking about their chief scout? Newman might recommend players but has fuck all to do with deciding who we bid for or the actual negotiations themselves, so he's pretty irrelevant to this.

I listened to the interview but at no point do I recall Moyes mentioning Rob Newmans input.. the board were brilliant including KB but no praise for Newman?
Should we read anything into that?

Quite possibly.
The idea of Moyes being as inept and conniving as his employers is a difficult and worrying concept to grasp.
I believe a more likely (and admittedly comforting) explanation is that he is signalling her involvement as a reason for the abject failings in the window. Of course he could merely be choosing to lionise one of the most universally despised people in football in an attempt to alienate himself from the fanbase but that doesn't seem likely does it?

Moyes is the aunt Sally here. He wants to improve the squad but he does not hold the purse strings. It is as simple as that.
We will never know but how might things have panned out if he had remained and been handed the Pellegrini budget?
